Itchy’s Thought
As I slowly awakened from a dream about my home in Badger Wood before the Upples arrived, I couldn’t help thinking back to how I met my friend Enor-mouse (Norm to his friends).
Peter the pheasant, our postman had just told me some rather disturbing news about the Upples planning to build housing in Badger Wood. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing, Badger Wood was our home how could the Upples even do such a thing? I was so worried about my home and what would become of myself, Matty and our woodland friends.
Danger ahead!
I wasn’t really paying attention where I was going when I tripped and fell down a well! The beautiful soft apples I had been carrying scattered across the frozen ground while I tumbled head first into the icy water.
Although I can swim quite well, the sides of the well were slippery and I hurt one of my back paws when I fell. I called and called for help, but my voice seemed to just disappear. I struggled and fought to get some grip on the green slimy walls, but the more desperately I tried, I just couldn’t climb out.
Tired, and sore, I had nearly given up hope when Norm’s face appeared above me, his whiskers covered in tomato sauce from the pizza he had found. Ha ha, looking back on it he did look funny peering down at me.
At first Norm tried to reach me but I was too far down. However, my clever brave friend would not give up. Just as I thought all was lost and I would surely drown, a very long tail slid down the well, which I was able to place around my waist and be pulled out.
What a fantastic friend to have! Norm had placed his own life in danger in order to save mine, a badger he had never met before, how can I ever repay him, after all he too could have fallen in!
“Oh! this itchy fur! It’s a good job I keep a sharp claw to scratch with,” and it’s no good thinking of Badger Wood, I have to look for lots of worms. “Oh how I miss helping Matty and eating our warm worm stew in our cosy sett”.
